Noted Sudan scholars including Gﾃδｩrard Prunier responded to Mahmood Mamdani's recent article on the politics of labeling genocide (see March 21 Darfur News Brief)， saying Mamdani's analysis of the situation represents an inaccurate understanding of the process of "Arabization" in Sudan， painting it as an indigenous process when in fact it has been one of "cultural diffusion." Another writer argues the process of Arabization in Sudan has been a colonial process， through the government's refusal of language， religion， or other "uncivilized" practices.
